White as the new full time Executive Director of The Heart Touch Project. Concluding a two-month search, the Board selected Mr White to fill the post from the field of qualified candidates at its last meeting. His official starting date is Monday, May 14.

Bill started his nonprofit career evaluating national charities as Vice President of the National Charities Information Bureau in New York. Most recently, Bill directed the successful effort to create a historic multi-million dollar at-risk youth and family educational center in Harvard Heights, Los Angeles, with the Byzantine Latino Quarter Foundation.

In reflecting on his appointment, Bill stated, “I am excited and honored to be with the Heart Touch team. I’m looking forward to helping enhance the compassionate work pioneered by founder Shawnee Isaac Smith, the Board, staff and caring volunteers who are so committed to Heart Touch! I also look forward to solid growth and expansion of The Heart Touch Project in the years ahead.”

Shawnee Isaac Smith, founder, expressed her approval of the Board’s decision, saying: “Heart Touch is privileged to have Bill White with us. He brings a wealth of experience in program development, strategic planning, fund-raising, grant writing, budgeting, marketing and administration to our organization. We welcome his effort to lead our Heart Touch “team” to become more robust and forward thinking.”

We are also pleased to announce that Patrick Callahan, who has served as part-time Executive Director since 2007, will continue to enhance our programs by leading the Heart Touch Children’s Program and the International Outreach Program.

The change allows us to devote one training exclusively to working with infants while the other training will focus on pediatric patients who range in age from toddlers to adolescence. The basic course-Massage for Medically Complex Children and Adolescents-is required for all new volunteers. For those who wish to work with infants in a NICU or in hospice, the second training-Massage for Medically Complex Infants-is required. Both trainings are two days in length and each awards sixteen continuing education hours. For course descriptions and fee information, select the Trainings tab and then the name of the course. Applications can be downloaded using the Application Forms tab. Course dates are posted in the Calendar section.

Because we must make travel and lodging reservations well in advance, applications to participate are due by June 1. As a reminder, the dates for our fifth outreach trip to Cambodia are November 23 to December 8, 2012. For those considering the India trip, the dates are December 27, 2012, to January 12, 2013. More information about activities and costs is found by choosing the “International Outreach Program” option under the Volunteer Programs tab. An application can be downloaded using the Applications Forms tab.

The volunteers provided compassionate touch to children at New Hope for Cambodian Children as well as a shelter for people who have suffered acid burns, children at a hospital ER and adults in the TB ward. CranioSacral Therapy Heart Touch Project Geriatric Massage

CranioSacral Therapy and Geriatrics training is designed to train laypersons, elder care practitioners and healthcare practitioners. Students will learn how to apply CranioSacral Techniques such as the stillpoint to individuals with early onset, moderate and severe dementia and Alzheimer’s. Participants earn thirteen continuing education hours through the NCBTMB.

Tuition for the workshop is $300.

The Advanced Heart Touch Training in End-of-Life Care is designed to deepen and enhance the quality of interaction between therapists and their patients.

The new training is open to graduates of the Heart Touch Training who are currently working or have recently worked with a person in hospice. It will be held at Heart Touch on Sunday, June 28. Tuition is $150.00. Attendees will earn eight continuing education hours through the National Certification Board of Therapeutic Massage and Bodywork (NCBTMB) or through the California Board of Registered Nursing. Members of the Association of Professional Chaplains can also earn eight continuing education hours.

The Heart Touch Project is pleased to unveil our newly designed website, made possible by a generous grant from an anonymous donor. In addition to a fresh look, all the copy on the site has been rewritten. We’ve added photographs and new functionality to many of the pages and made navigation around the site much more convenient. We will also be adding more functionality in the coming weeks.

We invite you to explore the site and give us your feedback. Tell us what you like and don’t like about it. There’s a convenient way to do that. Select the “Contact Us” tab in the Navigation Bar above and a feedback form will appear. We want the site to serve your needs, so let us know what you think.

Heart Touch Receives Grant from the
Archstone Foundation

Heart Touch has been honored with a grant of $15,000 from the Archstone Foundation, a private, non-profit foundation whose mission is to prepare society for the growing needs of an aging society. The grant will support the Heart Touch Hospice Program in its efforts to make the final days of those nearing the end of life as comfortable and pain free as possible. This is the second grant Heart Touch has received from Archstone. It was with the help of their multi-year grant in 2002 that we launched our Hospice Program.

Advanced Heart Touch Training Developed

Heart Touch Founder Shawnee Isaac Smith has created an advanced training for those who work with hospice patients. The Advanced Heart Touch Training in End-of-Life Care is designed to deepen and enhance the quality of interaction between therapists and their patients.

The new training is open to graduates of the Heart Touch Training who are currently working or have recently worked with a person in hospice. It will be held at Heart Touch on Sunday, June 26. Tuition is $150.00. Attendees will earn eight continuing education hours through the National Certification Board of Therapeutic Massage and Bodywork (NCBTMB) or through the California Board of Registered Nursing. Members of the Association of Professional Chaplains can also earn eight continuing education hours.

Heart Touch Training in Compassionate Touch

This is the core training required of anyone who wishes to become a volunteer with one of our partner hospice groups. Tuition is $250.00. Attendees earn twenty continuing education hours.

Infant Massage Instructor Training

This training is a requirement for Children’s Program volunteers who wish to work with fragile newborns in a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at one of our partner hospitals or who will travel to India with the International Outreach Program. Tuition is $75.00 for Heart Touch volunteers and $250.00 for all others. Attendees earn twelve continuing education hours.
September 24 – 25, 2011

Massage for Medically Fragile Infants and Children

This training is a requirement for all Children’s Program volunteers who wish to work at one of our partner hospitals or who will travel to Cambodia with the International Outreach Program. Tuition is $75.00 for Heart Touch volunteers and $250.00 for all others. Attendees earn sixteen continuing education hours.
August 20 – 21, 2011

Dates Set for 2011 International Outreach Program Trips

Heart Touch volunteers will again travel to Cambodia to work with children orphaned because of HIV/AIDS, and to India to work with patients and teach at the AIMS Hospital.
